Additional course · 2 daysLNG expert course A new fuel on the river, a new certificate.
We are preparing a two-day course for the LNG expert certificate: bunkering, systems on board and emergencies. We will publish the date on this page.

Who needs an LNG expert certificate?
More and more inland vessels run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Under the EU directive, anyone who bunkers these vessels or navigates them needs an LNG expert certificate.
Our course will take two days: theory and practical training on a certified ship-handling simulator. We are still preparing it.
Five topics you have to master.
-
01
Rules
Legislation and safety
- Follow the rules and standards for vessels that use LNG as fuel.
- Apply the health and safety rules that relate to LNG.
-
02
Risks
What is specific about LNG
- Know the properties of LNG you have to keep in mind on board.
- Recognise risks early and deal with them.
-
03
Systems
LNG system on board
- Operate LNG-specific systems safely.
- Make sure they are checked regularly.
- Prepare the LNG system for vessel maintenance.
-
04
Bunkering
LNG bunkering
- Bunker LNG in a safe and controlled way.
-
05
Emergencies
Emergency situations
- Handle emergency situations related to LNG.
We plan to hold the practical part of the course on the certified ship-handling simulator in Hlohovec.

LNG expert course: frequently asked questions
When will the LNG course start?
We do not have a date yet and are not taking applications. When the course opens, we will publish it on this page.
Who needs an LNG expert certificate?
Under Directive (EU) 2017/2397: everyone who bunkers a vessel that uses liquefied natural gas as fuel, and the boatmaster who navigates such a vessel. You must carry the certificate with you while working.
Does the boatmaster of an LNG vessel need it too?
Yes. The boatmaster of an LNG vessel needs a specific authorisation, and to get it you must hold a Union certificate of qualification as an LNG expert.
What are the requirements for the certificate?
You must be at least 18 and meet the standards of competence for LNG experts set out in the directive. The assessment includes a practical exam, held on board a vessel or at a suitable shore-based facility.
How do I renew the certificate?
To renew it, you need to show at least 180 days of navigation on an LNG-powered vessel during the previous five years, or at least 90 days during the previous year. If you do not have this experience, you must meet the standards of competence again.
How long will the course take?
We plan two days: theory on LNG technology in inland shipping and practical training on a certified ship-handling simulator.
