Course for boatmasters · 3 days

Boatmaster course Radar patent Preparation and exam in one place.

A course for boatmasters who want to add radar to their patent (specific authorisation for radar navigation). You spend two days preparing on a certified ship-handling simulator, and on day three you take the radar exam, also at TMLG Academy.

You train on the simulator you then take the exam on.

New European legislation added a practical part to the radar exam. It is taken either on a vessel designated for it or on a certified ship-handling simulator. We have such a simulator in Hlohovec, so you can do both the preparation and the whole final exam with us.

Our instructors prepare you for the theory and the practical part. You will understand how different radar systems work and what radar range, resolution and signal attenuation mean, and you will learn to use radar in practice: pick up a target and track it.

  • I work on a ship for TMLG Group and I’m taking the boatmaster courses one at a time. So far the simulator has given me the most: I can try handling the ship before I need it for real. Step by step, I’m building a career on the river.

FAQ

FAQ: Radar patent

Who can apply for the radar exam?

You can only take the radar exam after passing the boatmaster exam. If you don’t have the UNION patent yet, start with the Boatmaster course – UNION patent.

Can I take the boatmaster and radar exams at the same time?

No. The boatmaster exam is very extensive and time-consuming; it could not be managed together with the radar exam. First you get the UNION patent, then we prepare you for the Radar patent, and after that you can go on to the M patent (specific authorisation for inland waterways with a maritime character).

What has changed in the radar exam?

Under the new European legislation the radar exam has new theory and a new practical part. It can be taken on a vessel designated for it or on a certified simulator like the one we have at TMLG Academy.

Will you prepare me for the theory too?

Yes. Our instructors prepare you for both the theory and the practical part of the exam. The whole final exam then takes place with us, on the certified simulator you prepare on.

How does the course work?

Three days at TMLG Academy. For the first two days you prepare on a certified ship-handling simulator, guided by instructors; on day three you take the exam. If needed, the practical part can take more than one day, depending on how you get on.

How much does the course cost?

€2,490 excl. VAT. The price covers the practical preparation and the exam itself.

When is the next date?

There are no fixed dates: we agree the date individually with the instructor. Send your application and we will get back to you.

Where does the course take place?

At TMLG Academy in Hlohovec (M. R. Štefánika 31, 920 01 Hlohovec), where we have a certified ship-handling simulator.

Who can I ask about the course?

For questions about the content, format and requirements of the course, contact head instructor Capt. Matúš Pohuba (+421 917 166 721, matus.pohuba@tmlgacademy.eu). Registration: Zuzana Panák in German (+352 661 566 000) or Agáta Jendrichovská in Dutch (+352 661 565 000).
